Do you think Nigerians have spend up to 1billion naira on alcohol ?well what the english are spending on gin passed £1 billion for the first time this year.
According to market researchers Mintel, who quizzed over 2,000 adults about their favourite tipple, Brits are expected to down 29 million litres of gin this year in total, with one third having drunk it within the past year.
We are officially a nation of gin lovers.
And it’s becoming more popular with the younger crowd. More than 40 per cent of those aged 18 to 34 had drunk gin in the past year, compared with just over a quarter of the over-45s.
Apparently, young drinkers see gin as ‘the most sophisticated’ white spirit. However, vodka continues to be the nation’s favourite – it still accounts for more than 60 per cent of the spirit market, sales figures show.
‘The strong performance of gin continues to stand out within the spirits market, and is widely seen as the most sophisticated type of white spirit by category users,’ said senior drinks analyst Chris Wisson (who’s senior, so he should know).
He added: ‘Our research indicates that gin is in fact now most likely to be drunk by younger consumers, suggesting that it has a chance to forge a dynamic image and move into even more innovative areas.’
And, according to Connor Campbell, senior market analyst at www.spreadex.com, things can only get better. ‘There’s no reason why gin’s current successes can’t continue in 2016; since 2010 the spirit has grown a staggering 40%, with projections suggesting it will hit £1.3 billion in revenue by 2020,’ he told Metro.co.uk
